 HOW WHATSAPP WAS FOUNDED

Whatsapp was named so to sound like "What's up".

It was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum.

In 2009, after buying an iPhone, Brian Acton was amazed to see that there was no feature like WhatsApp at that date in-app store.

So he and his friend Jan Koum,  met with their friend Alex Fishman to discuss a new type of messaging app that would show "Statuses next to individual names of the people"

On February 24, 2009, he incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California.

When early versions of WhatsApp kept crashing, Koum considered giving up and looking for a new job. Acton encouraged him to wait for a "few more months".



UPDATE 1: NOTIFICATION

In June 2009, Apple launched push notifications, allowing users to be pinged when they were not using an app. Koum changed WhatsApp so that everyone in the user's network would be notified when a user's status is changed.

UPDATE 2: ANDROID

Subsequently, WhatsApp for Android OS was added to the play store in August 2010.

UPDATE 3: FACEBOOK

 In 2014, Facebook, Inc. announced it was acquiring WhatsApp for US$19 billion.

UPDATE 4: VOICE CALLS

Voice calls between two accounts were added to the app in March and April 2015.

UPDATE 5: VIDEO CALLS

In 2016,  video calls between two accounts were introduced.

UPDATE 6: STATUS

On February 24, 2017, (WhatsApp's 8th birthday), WhatsApp launched a new Status feature similar to Snapchat and Facebook stories.

UPDATE 7: SIGNAL

In 2017, WhatsApp's co-founder Brian Acton left the company to start a new company which is now called "Signal".
